How to choose the right frame

Four questions decide most gifts. Answer them for the person you're buying for.

Is their Wi-Fi unreliable, or missing?

Pick a frame that stores photos on the frame itself. The Skylight and Dragon Touch keep showing saved photos when the Wi-Fi drops. Aura frames keep photos in the cloud, so they need Wi-Fi to show them.

Do they use a smartphone?

They don't need one for any of our picks. For the least effort on their side, choose a frame you can fill before it's unwrapped: Skylight's gift mode, or Aura's preloaded photos and message.

Who will send the photos, and how?

If many relatives will send photos from different devices, Aura takes the most ways in: app, email, web and text, with unlimited storage. Skylight takes email or app, and anyone can send without an account.

What's your budget, including later?

Aura and Dragon Touch have no subscription. Skylight is free for photos, with an optional $39/year plan for videos and albums. The Dragon Touch is the lowest price, and the Aura Carver is the best value with a premium app.

Frames we looked at that didn't make our top four, and why.

FramePriceWhy it's not in our top four
Nixplay 10.1"About $140–170Good picture and easy sharing for big families. But the free plan is limited (500 MB of cloud storage, one shared album), and many customer reviews complain about the move to a paid plan from $19.99/year. For a gift, that can mean a surprise bill later.
Pix-Star 10.4"About $140A solid choice with no monthly fee, photos by email and control of several frames from one account. Better for families who like to manage settings themselves than for a hands-off gift.
Pastigio Frameo 15.6"Often under $100 on saleThe biggest screen for the money and no subscription. The build feels less refined, and it's a less-known brand.

How we score

Before you buy

Does the person receiving it need a smartphone?

No, not for any of our four picks. With Aura and Skylight, the person giving the frame can set it up and add photos from their own phone before it's unwrapped. Dragon Touch needs to be paired once in its app, which you can do before you wrap it.

Is there a monthly fee?

Aura and Dragon Touch have no subscription. Skylight is free for sending and showing photos; videos, captions and albums need Skylight Plus at $39 a year, which you can cancel any time.

Can the whole family add photos?

Yes. Aura frames accept photos from the app, email, the web or a text message, from anyone you invite. Skylight takes photos by email or app, with no account needed to send. Dragon Touch takes photos from its app or by email.

Can I set it up before I give it?

Yes. Aura lets you preload photos, videos and a message, and ships in gift-ready packaging. Skylight has a gift mode that works before the frame is even unboxed. Dragon Touch can be set up and filled with photos before you wrap it.

What happens if the Wi-Fi goes down?

Skylight and Dragon Touch store photos on the frame and keep showing them. Aura keeps photos in its cloud, so it needs Wi-Fi to show them.

Quick answers
